There seems to be an unspoken rule that holidays should be productive.
You should come home with hundreds of photos, aching legs, a list of every beach you’ve visited, and a vague sense that you’ve “made the most of it.”
We don’t really subscribe to that.
Sometimes you’ve spent weeks juggling work, family, dogs, life, and the never-ending list of things that need doing. By the time your holiday finally arrives, the only thing you want to achieve is sitting down with a cup of tea while your dogs investigate every blade of grass as if they’ve just discovered Cornwall themselves.
That counts.
In fact, we’d argue it’s the whole point.
At Bed and Basket near St Austell, we believe a dog-friendly holiday in Cornwall doesn’t have to be all go, go, go.
Sometimes the best holiday is the one where absolutely nothing much happens at all.
There Is No Holiday Exam
Nobody is handing out prizes for visiting the most beaches.
Nobody is checking whether you’ve walked ten miles before lunch.
Nobody is waiting at the end of the week to ask if you’ve seen every picturesque fishing village.
If your biggest decision of the day is whether to have another coffee or open a bottle of wine a little earlier than usual, you’re probably doing rather well.
We’ve watched plenty of guests arrive with ambitious plans.
“We’re going to explore every day.”
“We’ve made a list of places we want to visit.”
“We’ve got so much we want to fit in.”
Then they unpack the car.
The dogs have a run around the paddocks.
Someone makes a cup of tea.
Someone else sits down “Just for five minutes.”
Three hours later they’re still there, wondering why they ever thought they needed an itinerary.
We’re not saying Cornwall isn’t worth exploring.
It absolutely is.
We’re just saying it’ll still be there tomorrow.
Your Dogs Are Relaxing Too
One of our favourite things to watch is how quickly dogs settle when everything feels easy.
They don’t spend the first day worrying whether they’re allowed on the sofa..
They don’t feel guilty about having an afternoon nap.
They simply have a good sniff, a proper run, something to eat, and then decide the best place to be is fast asleep with their legs in the air. Maybe snoring.
They’re onto something.
Humans take a little longer.
We spend the first day convincing ourselves we should be “making the most” of the holiday.
Dogs seem to know from the moment they arrive that this is making the most of it.
Come As You Are
If you wander into the paddocks wearing pyjamas, an Oodie and yesterday’s hairstyle while clutching a mug of coffee…
Completely normal.
If your dogs somehow manage to find mud despite the fact it hasn’t rained for three days…
Also completely normal.
If you spend an entire afternoon reading the same three pages because you keep falling asleep…
We’d call that a successful afternoon.
And if we happen to see you wandering around the barns or paddocks, we’ll always give you a friendly wave and say hello.
But if you’re radiating strong “I’m off-grid, my inbox is closed, and I’m pretending the outside world doesn’t exist” energy…
We’ll take the hint.
No offence taken.
Sometimes the kindest thing we can do is simply leave you to enjoy the peace.
There’s something wonderfully freeing about being somewhere you don’t feel you have to perform.
No pretending you’ve got endless energy.
No pressure to be sociable.
No expectation that every minute has to be memorable enough for Instagram.
No guilt if your biggest achievement is finally finishing that book you’ve been “currently reading” since February.
Sometimes the most memorable holidays are the ones where almost nothing happens.

For 30 odd years we’ve lived with large dogs, fostered rescue dogs, supported rescue work, and built our days around dogs.
